Scope note
Scales with fixed counterweights at one end of a horizontal bar, a movable fulcrum which allows for changes in the ratio of the lengths of the arms, and a single hook from which to attach the item to be weighed; for scales of similar form, but with a fixed fulcrum and a movable counterweight, use "steelyards."
