- Small, decorative handbags, usually without handles, but often with an attached chain, intended as accessories for women's formal evening wear. They are typically constructed as small rigid metal boxes that hold only a few essential cosmetic items, and may have elaborate shapes, beading, metalwork or other forms of surface embellishment. The term was coined by the jeweler Charles Arpels in 1930 to describe objects of his design.
