Scope note
Cloth dresses typically worn by Native North American women from the Plateau region (including Yakama, Cayuse, and Umatilla communities, amongst others.) Derived from pre-contact buckskin dresses, wingdresses today are usually made from cotton fabric, sometimes decorated with florals. Sleeves are cut to drape over the arms, mimicking the form of a bird's wing. Usually worn for various ceremonies, such as the Fancy Shawl Dance.
