Scope note
Devices applied to pottery, often to the bottom of a vessel or plate, for the purpose of identifying the origin of commercial pottery wares. Some ancient Greek wares include such marks; more are evident in Renaissance European wares; and the application of factory marks became nearly universally common in the 20th century.
