Scope note
Literally "mirror lid", these netsuke carvings contained a metal mirror, usually of copper, silver or an alloy of copper and gold, set on a bowl of ivory, wood or other material. They were devised after the prohibition against carrying swords in 1876 as an outlet for swordsmiths.
