Scope note
Refers to a distinct type of bobbin lace created in Lille, which is now in France but was formerly in Flanders. It was created primarily during the 16th through 19th centuries. It also refers to imitations of Lille lace made later and/or in other locations. It is characterized by a very fine net background formed of a hexagonal mesh in which the thread is twisted rather than plaited. The designs typically include curving flowers and scrolls, and small, square dots scattered over open areas of mesh.
