Scope note
Refers to the Predynastic period in Upper Egypt around 4500 BCE. The period is characterized by pottery that is primitive in appearance which has led some scholars to believe it is earlier in date than the Badarian period. Others believe it is contemporary with the Badarian period or just an early stage of it.
