Diospyros (genus)

Scope note: Genus containing around 500 species of deciduous or evergreen trees and shrubs, generally native to the tropics. They are commonly known as ebony or persimmon trees. The leaves, which lack teeth, are usually borne alternately on opposite sides of the twig. The fruit is a large juicy berry with 1 to 10 seeds. Some members of the genus are valuable for their timber; others are cultivated for their handsome foliage or edible fruit. The wood was used by the ancient kings of India for scepters, sculptures, and drinking cups, because it was believed to prevent poisoning. Herodotus states that the Ethiopians every three years sent a tribute of 200 logs of ebony to Persia.
