Scope note
Vessels reserved for the eucharist, used to hold the hosts for distribution to the faithful during a liturgy; often taking the form of a cup with an arched cover. The term may also be used for vessels taking the form of a temple or tabernacle, sometimes suspended from the roof of ciboria (structures). For shallow or deeper bowls used to hold the hosts for distribution to the faithful in place of the ciborium, use "communion bowls."
