Scope note
Refers to open-sided structures, set against a barn or other large farm building, for sheltering bovines and for protecting manure piles from the weather to preserve their nutrients. May also refer to any open-fronted shed that provides shelter for cattle kept in yards, whether it has one to three walls and stands alone or is a lean-to set against a barn. Originally such sheds typically formed part of a farmyard group, with barns and other sheds around a central yard. For four-walled buildings designed for the housing of bovines, use either "cattle barns" or "dairy barns."
