- Refers to informal restaurants in France, or those elsewhere following this French type, that serve simply prepared foods, beers, and ales. First used in English in 1864 to mean a restaurant with an attached brewery, derived from the French "brasserie" (lit. "brewery"). The emphasis shifted to the restaurant side of the establishment by the 20th century .
