Scope note
Refers to informal restaurants in France, or those elsewhere following this French type, that serve simply prepared foods, beers, and ales. First used in English in 1864 to mean a restaurant with an attached brewery, derived from the French "brasserie" (lit. "brewery"). The emphasis shifted to the restaurant side of the establishment by the 20th century .
