- Golden ornaments in the form of seals attached to special decrees issued by Popes, Byzantine Emperors, and later by European monarchs in the Middle Ages and Renaissance. The term originally referred to a golden seal itself, but came to be applied to the entire decree: for the proper name of a particular decree, use the CONA Iconography Authority or another authority.
