The terms 'lead pencil' and 'graphite pencil' are often used interchangeably as earlier forms, known as graphite pencils, used pure natural graphite without clay additives. 'Graphite pencil' technically refers to pencils in which pure natural graphite is used without the addition of a clay binder.
