bugles (valveless aerophones)
- Scope note
- Most commonly keyless, valveless aerophones with a wide conical bore, usually though not always coiled, and a cup mouthpiece, now used chiefly for military and parade use. Early in the 19th century, the addition of keys and valves lent a full chromatic scale: for these instruments use "keyed bugles."
