Scope note
Mulelike footwear with a vamp and no quarters worn from the 15th into the 17th century and having two different functions, as slippers intended for indoor use and as overshoes with a thick sole, often of cork, intended for outdoor use. For women's shoes or overshoes with a mulelike upper and a high platform sole, use "chopines."
