Footwear made partly or wholly of wood, with a thick sole usually of wood, but sometimes of leather or cork; originally to protect the foot, hosiery, or other footwear. The term "clogs" may also apply to shoes in the style of wooden clogs, but made of other materials. For overshoes consisting of a sole set on bands of iron, use "pattens."
