Scope note
Headdresses of a type worn by important figures in Tsimshian society, such as chiefs or leaders of carving societies. Consists of a wooden base with a carved frontlet, usually depicting clan crest figures, animal whiskers protruding from the top, and a train of ermine skins framing the back and sides of the headdress. Sometimes a space is carved in the frontlet to hold feathers, which would be used by chiefs to welcome indivduals during various ceremonies.
