Identification numbers associated with objects or documents that are assigned by an individual collector, rather than a numerical system applied by a repository. These numbers may appear on the backs of paintings, and occasionally appear in stock books along with other descriptions of an object. These are similar to collector’s marks but without a stamp, and may be numeric or alphanumeric.
