Scope note
Refers to the first photographs produced by William Henry Fox Talbot. They were created with a printing-out process, some as photograms and others with a camera. Distinguished from "calotypes" which were produced by Talbot's later improved and patented developing-out process called "calotype." In the mid-19th century, sometimes used as a synonym of photographs. For most prints made from these negatives, use "salted paper prints."
