- Refers to clergymen in the Anglican Church responsible for assisting diocesan bishops in ceremonial functions and administrative work. Duties typically include general supervision of parish clergy and attention to matters of church buildings and other property. Archdeacons are styled as 'Venerable.' The office formerly also existed in the Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox Churches; in the Roman Catholic Church the role has been displaced by that of Vicar-General.
