Scope note
Refers to Zoroastrian priests of the lower degree. Ervads have undertaken navar, the first of the two initiation rites for priests. In the more important ceremonies, ervads act only as assistant priests. The correlating historical term, 'ehrpats,' originally referred to religious teachers who were entrusted with the care of the fire.
