Scope note
Masked, comic actors referred to as "gossips" in farces adopted from Greek Middle Comedy plays and especially popular in southern Italy in the 4th and 3rd centuries BCE. Known principally from vase paintings, these are grotesque figures meant to satirize aspects of everyday life, or as burlesques of mythology.
