Scope note
Species of shrub native to central and southern Europe, northwest Africa and western Asia, naturalized in northern Europe and North America. The seeds and berries are used for food; other parts of the plant are both mildly poisonous and medicinal. The bark has been used as a raw material for a natural dye.
