Species of aquatic perennial plant native to tropical Asia and Australia, having showy white or pink flowers. Under favorable circumstances its seeds may remain viable for many years, with the oldest recorded lotus germination occurring with seeds that were 1,300 years old, recovered from a dry lakebed in China. It is a sacred bloom in Hindu and Buddhist iconography.
