purpleheart (wood)
- Scope note
- Strong, elastic purplish wood derived from several species of the genus Peltogyne. The heartwood is brown when freshly cut becoming deep purple upon exposure to air, eventually turning to a dark brown with sharply demarcated off-white sapwood. Has a fine, uniform texture and grain that is straight or slightly roey. The durable, shock-resistant wood is sometimes used for carving and for vehicle construction. Also used widely in furniture-making, marquetry, veneers, flooring, etc.
