Scope note
Strong, elastic purplish wood derived from several species of the genus Peltogyne. The heartwood is brown when freshly cut becoming deep purple upon exposure to air, eventually turning to a dark brown with sharply demarcated off-white sapwood. Has a fine, uniform texture and grain that is straight or slightly roey. The durable, shock-resistant wood is sometimes used for carving and for vehicle construction. Also used widely in furniture-making, marquetry, veneers, flooring, etc.
