snakewood (wood)
- Scope note
- Durable wood of the species Brosimum guianense, that is deep mahogany-red in color, heavy, with a fine uniform texture. Although the grain is straight, the wood has a distinct yellow, dark red, and brown mottled pattern that resembles snakeskin. It was particularly popular for veneers in the late 18th century. It is still used for veneers, walking sticks, modeling tools, and umbrella handles.
