dingbats (apartment buildings)
- Scope note
- Box-like, two or three story walk-up apartment buildings typically made of stucco and having sheltered parking at street level. The style was popular in Los Angeles, California in the 1950s and 1960s, and because of their mass proliferation, dingbats have come to be seen as signs of urban blight. In recent times, they have been the subject of aesthetic interest as examples of Mid-Century Modern kitsch, since many have themed names and specialized trim.
