Scope note
A type of Roman Catholic chapel constructed in 16th century colonial Mexico, consisting of a chancel that opens to the atrium at ground level or raised to allow better visibility. Existing examples include the open chapels in Teposcolula and Calimaya. Recintos abiertos dedicados al culto, creadas en el siglo XVI, por frailes españoles en América, para dar solución al gran número de asistentes a las misas y a su vez mantener la modalidad de uso del espacio exterior sacro, habitual entre los indígenas.
