slut lamps
- Scope note
- Relatively small grease-burning pan lamps, often used in kitchens, in which animal fat was placed in a round or spade-shaped metal cup, and wicks made of cord or rags (called "sluts," in reference to their being messy and dirty) were placed in one or two spouts at the side; the device was often attached to a large saucer to catch overflow or drippings.
