- A low, portable candleholder of a design reserved for a pope, cardinal, bishop, and certain abbots and other high-ranking prelates; usually made of silver, with a wide drip pan and ring or a long handle, which may store a spare candle. It is used to illuminate the liturgical books during pontifical services, and may bear the coat of arms of the pope.
