- Types of sofas or settees that were developed in France in the 18th century and picked up by Thomas Chippendale and other furniture makers in Europe and North America. They are distinguished by having a rather delicate and curvilinear style, carved and polished exposed sections of the wood frame, with stuffed backs and seats, arms that may or may not be stuffed, and elegantly carved exposed legs.
