Beds with a canopy, often suspended from an ornate horizontal frame, attached to the wall behind the head or to the ceiling and not supported on posts or columns. The term refers particularly to beds dating from the 17th century and later. For beds having simpler unsupported curtains, spanning a space shorter than the length bed, use "lits d'ange."
