Beds designed with a very high canopy suspended from an ornate horizontal frame, attached to the wall behind the head or to the ceiling, and often supported by columns or posts at the foot of the bed. For beds of similar design, but of lesser height and bulk, without the supporting posts at the foot, use "lits à la duchesse."
