- End-blown marine shell trumpets of Japan, made of a conch shell either with a wood or metal mouthpiece fitted to the narrow end or with the pointed end snipped off and the hole polished smooth for blowing. They have been used since at least the 7th century in Buddhist ritual, and also for signalling troops in battle.
