Scope note
Catboats developed in the 1870s around Cape Cod and Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts, and generally characterized by a 1:2 beam to length ratio, high freeboard, large cockpit, perpendicular square stern, and large outboard rudder; first built for fishing and later used as pleasure craft. Distinguished from "Great South Bay catboats" which have a lower freeboard, narrower beam, and a counter stern.
