florins (general, coins by denomination)
- Scope note
- General term for a number of gold or silver coins based on the Florentine original gold coin. Originally, florins were Florentine gold coins struck from 1252 until the 16th century; to refer specifically to the Florentine coins, prefer the narrower term "fiorini d'oro." Examples of florins include Hungarian gold coins introduced in the early 14th century, Austrian silver coins of the 19th and 20th centuries, and English two-shilling silver coins issued in the 19th century.
