- Various gold or silver coins or bullion with the value of a particular monetary unit, originally based on the value of a given weight, called a "mark," of pure silver. The term refers to silver coins of Sweden and northern Germany issued since the 16th century; and since the late 19th century, to German coins of various metals and denominations. In England, it refers to a monetary unit equivalent in value to two-thirds of a troy pound of pure silver or two-thirds of a pound sterling.
