Short-lived species of deciduous tree native to North America, ranging from Ontario to Nova Scotia, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey, with disjunct populations in Indiana, Virginia, and North Carolina. It prefers poor, dry upland soils, but is also found in moist mixed woodlands.
