Members of the only living species in its genus. It is a medium-sized rodent with a laterally flattened tail, short legs, and a compact body, indigenous to wetlands of North America but found also in South America, Europe, Ukraine, Russia, Siberia, adjacent areas of China and Mongolia, and Honshu Island in Japan.
