Vicugna pacos (species)

- Members of a species of Peruvian quadruped having long fine woolly hair. Along with the llama, the alpaca was apparently domesticated several thousand years ago by the Indians of the Andes Mountains of South America. Alpacas are considerably smaller than llamas, and unlike llamas, alpacas are not used as beasts of burden but are valued only for their fiber.
