A spectrometer-based OCT technique using a broadband light source and an interferometer. A low-loss spectrometer measures the spectrum of the interference pattern of light returned from the reference and sample arms of the interferometer. SDOCT has been used in a conservation science context for noninvasive and noncontact assessment of varnish layer thickness and structure on easel paintings.
