holm oak (wood)
- Scope note
- A hardwood of the species Quercus ilex, or holm oak, an evergreen tree native to the Mediterranean Basin. The trees are often managed as coppice forest, mainly for the production of firewood. Holm oak wood is of light to medium brown color and has a fairly coarse grain. Due to its density and rot resistance it has been used in boatbuilding. The wood is harder and tougher than that of the English oak and the sessile oak, and has a distinctive odor.
