Scope note
Ancient Greek or Roman buildings for training in wrestling or other athletic endeavors. Palaestrae were often part of public gymnasia, although some functioned independently. The floorplan of palaestrae was standardized, usually comprising a rectangular court surrounded by colonnades with adjoining rooms devoted to activities such as undressing, bathing, socializing, observation, instruction, and storage.
