Scope note
In the Catholic church, churches having been bestowed an honorific by canon lawyers and liturgists, the character of which may vary. Basilicas in this sense are divided into two classes, the greater or patriarchal, and the lesser basilicas. For built works having a basilican floor plan, use "basilicas (works by form)."
