soumaks (rugs)
- Scope note
- Flat-woven rugs from Turkey, elsewhere in the Caucasus, and surrounding areas; patterned by supplementary wrapping wefts. They are typically heavy and stiff; they may be distinguished by their pattern, which is visible from only from one side with the reverse often having threads of yarn left hanging on the back. The technique is one of the oldest known, identified among charred 7th-century-BCE fragments excavated at Gordion, near Ankara in Anatolia.
