Scope note
Pistols small enough to be carried in a pocket or otherwise concealed about the body, originating in the late 16th century though most common from the second half of the 17th to the late 19th century. Many feature mechanisms such as box locks, folding triggers, and safety catches to reduce the danger of the pistol catching on the clothing when withdrawn.
