Scope note
Language now spoken in Spain and as a first language by around 360 million people worldwide. Given that the Castilian dialect is the source from which modern standard Spanish developed, this language overall may be called "Castilian"; however, for the dialect spoken in Castile and elsewhere in northern and central Spain, use "Castilian Spanish." Refers broadly to the Romance language that developed from Vulgar Latin with contributions from the pre-Roman languages that were spoken in the territory of the Astures, an ancient tribe of the Iberian peninsula.
