Scope note
Pervasive, oversimplified, culturally contingent, and often inaccurate characterizations of particular social groups, rooted in assumption or perception rather than empirical data. Such assumptions are often deeply embedded within power structures and social institutions. The study of stereotyping within the social sciences is widely traced to Walter Lippmann, who coined the social use of the term in his 1922 book "Public Opinon."
