kolossoi
- Scope note
- Anthropomorphic figurines or dolls, typically made of wood, clay, wax, lead, or other malleable materials, used in ancient Greek tradition as symbolic focus entities to bind social and supernatural enemies. Unlike similar idol or binding figures utilized throughout ancient Greece and the Mediterranean, these figures are distinguished by both their fixed, immoble nature and use for defensive purposes; the figures were designed to contain, rather than destroy, hostile forces.
